CCNP Certification / ONT Exam:

Short answer: What is VAD, and what is its basic purpose? Hint: The "V" stands for Voice.

Answer: Voice Activity Detection (VAD) does much what it sounds like it does - it detects when you're talking and when you're not. VAD stops transmission when you're not saying anything in a VoIP conversation, which helps to save bandwidth.
