It's Thursday, November 20, and here the answers to yesterday's Cisco CCNA, Security, and CCNP questions for today!

CCNA Voice questions debut later this week!

CCNA Certification And CCENT Certification:

What interface-level OSPF command disqualifies that router from possibly becoming the DR or BDR for the segment that interface is connected to?

Answer: ip ospf priority 0.

CCNA Security Certification / CCNP ISCW Exam:

The SDM desktop launcher has one field where information can be entered, and a check box. What effect does checking that check box have?

Answer: That indicates that the device you're using SDM to configure is running HTTPS and you want a secure connection.

CCNP Certification / BSCI Exam:

In the world of BGP, what purpose does the MED serve?

Answer: The Multi-Exit Discriminator is an optional attribute that comes in handy when there are multiple paths by which a given AS can be entered. The AS sets MED values to tell the other AS which path to use to enter it. The MED value is passed between the two autonomous systems in question, but the value is not passed to any other ASes. The path with the lowest MED is the preferred path.

CCNP Certification / BCMSN Exam:

You want to put ports fast 0/1 - 0/6 into Etherchannel group 5, but you want to enter the interface-level command only once. How can you do this?

Answer: Use the interface range command to configure all the ports at once.

CCNP / ONT Exam:

In a CoPP configuration, what command is used to apply the policy?

Answer: The service-policy command.

It's Tuesday, November 18, and here the answers to yesterday's free Cisco training questions!

CCNA Voice questions debut later this week!

I posted quite a few new free Cisco training videos last week, with over 30 more to come over the next six weeks - be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel to be the first to know of new videos! Details in today's other blog posts!

CCNA Certification And CCENT Certification:

You've configured several username/password combinations in global configuration mode on your Cisco router. You want to use this database to authenticate incoming Telnet connections. What command should be placed on the VTY lines to make this happen?

Answer: You'll need the login local command. The login command by itself looks for a password actually configured on the VTY lines.

CCNA Security Certification / CCNP ISCW Exam:

What's the main difference between in-band and out-of-band management?

Answer: In-band management has network management data share a channel with regular data, while out-of-band management has a dedicated channel for network management traffic.

CCNP Certification / BSCI Exam:

Assuming you're working on a Cisco router (is there another kind? ;) ), what are the first three BGP criteria used in the best-path selection process?

Answer: First is highest weight, next is highest local preference, third is the fact that locally originated routes are preferred.

CCNP Certification / BCMSN Exam:

What security feature caused the following message? What event triggered the event? Finally, what if anything needs to be done to put the port back into operation?

05:06:04: %PM-4-ERR_DISABLE: psecure-violation error detected on Fa0/7, puttingFa0/7 in err-disable state

5:06:04: %PORT_SECURITY-2-PSECURE_VIOLATION: Security violation occurred, caused by MAC address 000f.f773.ed20 on port FastEthernet0/7.

Answer: Knowing this is Port Security is the easy part! Port Security was left at its default, since the violation shut the port down. When Port Security shuts a port down, that port goes into error-disabled state. By default, you'll need to manually reopen that port.

CCNP / ONT Exam:

What Cisco router planes are protected by CoPP?

Answer: The control and management planes.

More questions later today! Be sure to look out for my latest Cisco video as well, as we take a look at how to configure and troubleshoot an access server!

CCNA Security Certification / CCNP ISCW Exam:

What important purpose does the Diffie-Hellman algorithm play in VPN construction?

Answer: This algorithm allows the exchange of secure keys over a non-secure connection.

It's Saturday, November 15, and it's time for us to take a look at the answers to Thursday's Cisco practice exam questions!

I posted quite a few new free Cisco training videos this past week, with over 30 more to come over the next six weeks - be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel to be the first to know of new videos! Details in today's other blog posts!

CCNA Certification And CCENT Certification:

You're connecting two Cisco 2950 switches, and you want to create a trunk between them. What cable is required? Also, assuming the switches are at their defaults, what additional commands are needed to create the trunk?

Answer: You'll need a crossover cable. If the 2950s are at their defaults, you will need no additional commands as the ports will attempt to form a trunk dynamically.

That can present a security issue, which brings us to our next question!

CCNA Security Certification / CCNP ISCW Exam:

In the scenario presented in the above question, name three security features or practices you should consider configuring to prevent a rogue switch gaining access to your network.

Answer: You should consider using Root Guard, Port Guard, or using a unused VLAN as the default VLAN on the trunk.

You could also disable the transmission of Dynamic Trunking Protocol (DTP) frames.

CCNP Certification / BSCI Exam:

The variance command changes which of the following EIGRP values?

A. Advertised Distance

B. Feasible Distance

C. Both of these

D. Neither of these

Answer: D. The variance command doesn't actually change either of those values. Watch your routing tables the next time you run an EIGRP lab and you'll see this!

CCNP / ONT Exam:

You have a PDLM file in Flash, ccnp.pdlm, that you'd like to load as part of your NBAR configuration. What command will do this?

Answer: Loading a PDLM (assuming the PDLM is in Flash) :

R2(config)#ip nbar pdlm ?

WORD Full path of the PDLM file

R2(config)#ip nbar pdlm flash://ccnp.pdlm

CCNP / ONT Exam:

In the world of wireless networking, what is "Michael"? What is "Michael's" biggest security vulnerability?

Answer: WPA uses an 8-byte Message Integrity Check (MIC), sometimes called "Michael", to protect against replay attacks, spoofing, and man-in-the-middle attacks.

There's a potential issue with "Michael" (MIC). Access points that run WPA will shut down their Basic Service Set if it receives two packets, one right after the other, that has a bad MIC. A DoS attack specifically designed to counteract Michael can take advantage of this situation.

I'll have more Cisco practice exam questions for you later today, as well as an important (and free!) CCNP video. See you then!

CCNA Security Exam Tutorial: Adding SALT Can Be A Good Thing!

When you started studying for your CCNA certification exam, one of the very first things you learned was the major difference between the enable password and the enable secret - the enable secret is encrypted by default, where the enable password is just sitting there in clear text, waiting to be read!

When you look at the enable secret in a Cisco router configuration, it looks like it would be impossible to guess. After setting the enable secret on this router to the word security, here's how it appears in the configuration:

enable secret 5 $1$24me$gVFxUOI4gYp0IQbhtH8Rz0

That password has been encrypted by MD5, the Message Digest 5 algorithm. The result of the MD5 algorithm being applied to the password is a 32-character hexadecimal value.

That password is hard to guess, but not terribly hard to crack. Anyone looking over your shoulder would not be able to come up with that password, but there are readily-available password cracking software devices that can crack that encryption in a matter of minutes. That's true of any MD5-encrypted password, not just those on Cisco routers.

So what can we do about this? We can add salt to our MD5 encryption process.

The salt itself is simply a string of random characters that are added to the encryption process. Salting makes it much more difficult for a hacker to come up with the password; each bit added by the salt process literally makes it twice as difficult for the password to be compromised.

A recent Wikipedia entry states that if a password was one of 200,000 words, a 32-bit salt would require 800 trillion hashes for a full-blown brute force attack.

The actual creation and application of a salt is beyond the scope of the CCNA Security exam, but once you've earned that valuable certification - or maybe while you're preparing for it - do a Google search on "salt md5" and read up on this powerful security tool. In the meantime, read up on my other CCNA Security exam tutorials!

It's Tuesday, November 11, and it's time for the answers to yesterday's Cisco practice exam questions!

There are two new CCNA / CCNP training videos on the blog today, too! :)

CCNA Certification And CCENT Certification:

What protocol or service is shown running in the following debug? And by the way, what debug is running?

2d04h: Se1 CHAP: O CHALLENGE id 82 len 23 from "R3"
2d04h: Se1 CHAP: I CHALLENGE id 222 len 23 from "R1"
2d04h: Se1 CHAP: O RESPONSE id 222 len 23 from "R3"
2d04h: Se1 CHAP: I RESPONSE id 82 len 23 from "R1"
2d04h: Se1 CHAP: O SUCCESS id 82 len 4
2d04h: Se1 CHAP: I SUCCESS id 222 len 4

Answer: That's CHAP, as we can tell from the three-way handshake shown in that example, and the debug is show ppp authentication or show ppp negotiation.

Nick Allgood - Another Bryant Advantage CCNP Success Story!

Nick's email speaks for itself, so I'll shut up and let him talk!

"Hello Chris!

I finally passed my CCNP after several grueling months of study and lab work. I didn't use your materials for the BSCI or the BCMSN (but I sure wish I did)! I had a friend who didn't do so well on the BSCI and had retaken it a few times.

He then told me about your materials and said once he bought your materials he was able to pass with flying colors.

When I was ready for my ISCW I bought your study pack and was impressed. The study guides went a bit above the level of the exam in some areas, and thus allowing me to pass with a score in the high 900's. I was so impressed with it that when it came time for my ONT, I bought your ONT study materials and received similar results.

One other thing I wanted to note on was your style of writing.. the "Success Coaching" if you will. I REALLY was receptive to this style and think more people could learn from this method. The fact that you carefully placed small doses of positivity within the technical writings was really encouraging.

I also read your article "Keep your goals away from the trolls". I have been bullied in the past over the same type of thing, but after reading your article I no longer felt as "bullied".

I now am currently preparing to study for the CCIE written and lab exams. Please keep up the good work and if you write any CCIE level study guides, I won't hesitate to be a repeat customer.

Take care!
